Vietnam e-Visa program for Chinese citizens (Mainland Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao, BNO)

There are now 35 more countries that’s been added to the Vietnam e-Visa program. This includes Hong Kong (China) and Macau (China). Up until now, the Vietnam e-Visa system is only updated for the old version of the Hong Kong passport, which has a passport number that starts with the letter “K”. If you have a new version of the Hong Kong passport and your passport number starts with the letter “H”, you may not apply for the Vietnam e-Visa.

Below you will find a summary of all types of Chinese passports for the Vietnam e-Visa:

China Mainland passport

  • Old version passport (Passport number begins with letter “G”) : Eligible to apply for Vietnam Visa On Arrival & Vietnam e-visa
  • Chinese E-passport (Passport number begins with letter “E”) : NOT Eligible to apply for Vietnam e-visa. You should apply for visa on arrival or go to the embassy of Vietnam to apply for visa

Hong Kong passport

  • Old version passport (Passport number begins with letter “K”): Eligible to apply for Vietnam Visa On Arrival & Vietnam e-visa
  • New version passport (Passport number begins with letter “H”) : NOT Eligible to apply for Vietnam e-visa. You should apply for visa on arrival or go to the embassy of Vietnam to apply for visa

Hong Kong Document of Identity (HKDI) [香港特別行政區簽證身份書]

  • Hong Kong Document of Identity – HKDI (Passport number begins with letter “D”) : NOT Eligible to apply for Vietnam e-visa. You should apply for visa on arrival or go to the embassy of Vietnam to apply for visa

Macao

  • Passport number begins with “MA” is Eligible to apply for Vietnam Visa On Arrival & Vietnam e-visa

British National Oversea (BNO)

  • British National oversea – BNO passport holders are NOT Eligible to apply for Vietnam e-visa. You should apply for visa on arrival or go to the embassy of Vietnam to apply for visa

How do I apply for a Vietnam ‘Visa on Arrival’ online?

  1. Follow this link and fill in the online application form: http://www.visas.com.vn/apply-vietnam-visa/
  2. Use a debit or credit card to pay for the visa processing fee (6 USD/person).
  3. After you’ve sent in your online application form, we will send you an approval letter via the mail you submitted in your form within 2 business days, or sometimes on the same day, depending on whether you are using the normal or emergency service.
  4. Once you’ve landed at the airport in Vietnam, you will hand over your passport, visa approval letter, completed immigration form (NA1 Form), 2 passport photos and stamp fee (25 USD/single entry; 50 USD/multiple entry) to the customs officer. He will then stamp your passport.

You may identify the new Hong Kong passport by looking at the passport number. If it starts with an “H”, it’s an indicator that it’s a new passport.

The Hong Kong Document of Identity (HKDI) is a biometric travel document issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department for residents of Hong kong who are unable to obtain a national passport.
